WALKS:
JANUARY 1, SUNDAY, 1:30 PM, NEW YEAR’S DAY KIRKLAND/YARROW POINT WALK : 10426 NE Northup Way, Kirkland (meeting point). Our traditional New Year’s Day walk will be in a new place and at a new time. We will start with a wetlands walk, then walk slightly up hill and enter the Yarrow Point neighborhood. Enjoy happy hour or dinner with us at Big Fish Grill afterwards. Meet at the west end of the Big Fish Grill parking lot. DIRECTIONS from Redmond/Bellevue: Heading west on SR 520, take the 108th NE exit. Turn right onto 108th NE. Turn left onto Northup Way. From Seattle: Heading east, exit at Bellevue Way/Lake Washington Blvd. Turn right on Bellevue Way. Cross SR 520. Turn right on Northup Way. Contact: Sorell Fischer 425 485 6151.
JANUARY 7, SATURDAY, 11:00 AM, WEOWNA PARK WALK: 15500 SE 16th, Bellevue (meeting point). Take a peaceful 3-mile walk through towering remnants of old growth forest with views of Lake Sammamish and the Cascade Mountains in this spectacular 90-acre open space park. The path is bark and it will be somewhat hilly. Wear appropriate shoes. We’ll extend the walk to include surrounding residential areas. JANUARY 14, SATURDAY, 11:00 AM, QUEEN ANNE WALK: 7th Ave W & W Howe St, Seattle (meeting point). We will follow a 4.2 mile scenic route around the top edge of Queen Anne Hill, constructed between 1911 and 1916, to showcase the great views of Elliott Bay, downtown, Lake Union and Capitol Hill. DIRECTIONS: From I-5 take the Mercer St. exit. Turn left on Fairview, then right on Denny Way, then right on 1st Ave N. Make a left on Roy St, then right on Queen Anne Ave N. Go up the counterbalance and turn left on W. Galer St. and right on 6th Ave W. Turn left on W. Howe St and go one block to 7th Ave W. Allow plenty of time to get there from the eastside. JANUARY 21, SATURDAY, 11:00 AM, SEWARD PARK WALK: 5902 Lake Washington Blvd S, Seattle. This is a nice flat walk along Lake Washington next to a magnificent forest, the largest old growth forest remaining in Seattle. Meet between the Environmental Learning Center building directly in front of you as you enter the park and the restrooms next door. Parking lots are located to the right and the left of the entrance circle. We will have lunch nearby. No dogs please. DIRECTIONS: From the south: Take Rainier Ave. to Seward Park Ave. Turn right on Seward Park Ave. Turn right on Juneau to the park entrance. From I-90: take Rainier Ave. S. going south. Turn left on Genesee. At 50th and Genesee note the Both Ways Cafe on the left corner where we will have lunch. JANUARY 28, SATURDAY, 11:00 AM, SNOQUALMIE VALLEY TRAIL: 32401 E Entwistle St, Carnation. We will pick up this trail in Carnation and walk about 2 miles (4 miles round trip). The trail is flat, following the old railroad bed through forests and lowland farms along the east side of the Carnation Valley. Optional lunch nearby following the walk. DIRECTIONS: Carpooling is a good idea, meet at the trailhead. DIRECTIONS: From I-90: take Exit 22 (Preston/Fall City). Go left over the freeway, then right onto Preston/Fall City Rd. Go to Fall City and turn right and a quick left onto SR 203 (Fall City/Carnation Rd.) toward Carnation. Turn right on Entwhistle St, go about 6 blocks to Snoqualmie Valley Trail at Nick Loutsis Park on right hand side. From Redmond: Take SR 202 (Redmond/Fall City Rd.) and go to Fall City. Turn on to SR 203 (Fall City/Carnation Rd.) and go north to Carnation. Turn right onto Entwhistle St, go about 6 blocks to Snoqualmie Valley Trail at Park on right hand side. No dogs please. JANUARY 3, TUESDAY, 6:30 PM, ESS BOARD MEETING: Lake Hills Library, 15590 Lake Hills Blvd, Bellevue. The Board and Committee Members invite any ESS Member with ideas or information to attend this meeting. We will meet in a conference room at the library. You may bring in your dinner, if you like. DIRECTIONS: From I-90, exit at NE 148th St and turn north. Stay in the right hand lane and continue about 1 mile to Lake Hills Blvd. Turn right, and travel .5 mile to the library on the left. The Library is on the corner of Lake Hills Blvd and 156th SE. Parking is available below the library in the garage.
JANUARY 9, MONDAY, 6:45 PM, EASTSIDE SCIENCE CAFE at WILDE ROVER: 111 Central Way, Kirkland. The evening begins with a brief presentation by a scientist, followed by an extended discussion session between the scientist and audience. The January topic is “Pacific Northwest Volcanoes.” Join UW’s Dr. Brittany D. Brand as she explores how to monitor volcanoes for signs of unrest and how we can prepare for the possible consequences of an erupting volcano in our area. Confirm your attendance by Sunday, January 8. This event fills up very quickly, please arrive on time! DIRECTIONS: I-405 to Exit 18, 85th St NE. JANUARY 14, SATURDAY, 2:00 PM, MOVIES AT THE FRYE: 704 Terry Avenue, Seattle. The movie is Daisy Bates: First Lady of Little Rock. In 1957 the civil rights turmoil in Little Rock, Arkansas was a direct result of a Supreme Court decision that sought to end school segregation. At the very center of this battle was Daisy Bates, a feisty and determined woman who took nine black children and, with the help of the NAACP, paved their way to becoming the first African American students ever to integrate Central High School.
